The Punisher comics
When his wife and children were killed in the crossfire of a mafia hit in New York City, war vet Frank Castle became The Punisher: a cold-blooded vigilante who sees the murder of criminals as a required punishment for their crimes. Created by Gerry Conway and John Romita Sr. in the 1974 issue of Amazing Spider-Man #129, The Punisher would soon become so wildly popular as to not only appear again, but also to get his first dedicated long run series and spin-off runs. Although he was created as a tragic hired gun, he soon became an anti-hero that led the charge of a more violent, dark and aggressive series of lead characters that would take over comic books from the mid-80s to the late 90s.
In his first series, most notably and definitively for the time written by Chuck Dixon, The Punisher is shown to be cold, calculating, deeply tactical, and have very little room in his life for any pleasures at all. He considers his daily life to be a part of his “war”, and his life is dedicated to killing the next round of criminals. The Punisher is known to hire and align with others who provide him with technical and tactical information, but his relationships with them are generally utilitarian rather than for personal satisfaction. Castle has a code that prevents him from killing innocent civilians, police or members of the US military, and has often been used as a conflicting character next to heroes like Daredevil, Captain America, Wolverine, and of course Spider-Man.
Most notably, Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon helped to revitalize the character in 2000, first with a 12-issue limited series and then an ongoing series that had more focus on the brutality and intense psychological disorders that Frank Castle displays. Generally considered the most well-received series by both fans and critics alike, Ennis once again made The Punisher a force to recon with in the Marvel Universe.
Since Ennis’ work, writers such as Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, Greg Rucka, Nathan Edmondson, and most recently Becky Cloonan have all given unique takes on Frank Castle’s war on crime. Despite having no superman powers, he has always been shown to focus on street crime below the superhuman focus and to rely on his superior tactical combat knowledge to get the best of his enemies.
With three films, cameos in the 90’s Spider-Man cartoon, an animated feature film and featured role in the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil series, The Punisher’s appeal to fans and newcomers alike has led to over 40 years of successful stories for Marvel Comics.
